Across the country people are welcoming 2012 in all the usual ways, but more than 500 hikers in Qinghai province of northwest China are celebrating by giving back to the earth.
The hikers collect trash as they go, hoping to beautify the natural scenery around them. Local volunteers, as well as ones from the provinces of Hunan, Sichuan, Gansu and the capital, Beijing, all joined-in. And despite the cold, seniors and young children could be spotted taking part alongside them. Among them was, 76-year-old Zhao Faming...
Zhao Faming, hiker of Xining City, Qinghai Province, said, "I join in several activities of this kind every year, in order to protect the environment, wild animals and plants in the Qinghai Lake area. It is our mission to benefit future generations."
As the event came to a conclusion, participants signed their names to an initiative aimed at protecting Qinghai Lake. But they didn’t forget about the new year - choosing to mark the occasion with cheer.
