On May 10th,1941 - Hess.

For years, allied troops heavily guarded Spandau prison in West Berlin with only one aging prisoner within -- Adolf Hitler's most trusted official and longtime friend -- Rudolph Hess. After Hess crash landed a stolen plane in Scotland on May 10th 1941 in an unexplainable effort to negotiate an end to the war. Hilter disowned him and labeled him insane. Many agreed including Winston Churchill, who quipped “This is one of those cases where the imagination is baffled by the facts”. None of it speared Hess from later judgment at Nuremburg as a Nazi war criminal. His life sentence was doomed most as desire as his hopeless peace mission. Other Nazi war criminals, such as Albert Speer were eventually free but not Hess, whose only hope of release was death.
