This Day in History - March 1st Starring - The Peace Corps
March 1, 1961, President John F. Kennedy proposes the US Peace Corps, a voluntary youth organization designed to help developing nations. The President admits, that recruiting the best and the brightest of young Americans, to assist less advantaged nations with their medical, technical and agricultural expertise will not be easy. And despite an initial burst of enthusiasm from many young volunteers, budget cuts, mistrustful foreign governments and low pay did prevent the Peace Corps from becoming quite the diplomatic and educational force envisioned by Kennedy. The Corps did however survive, providing many valuable services and it became a role model for similar volunteer groups formed by other nations.
