This Day in History - March 8th Starring - Duke Ellington
Edward Kennedy “Duke“ Ellington was born in Washington, D.C. and made his first professional appearance there in 1916. But it was his experience as a pit band director for chorus and dance floor numbers at the Harlem's Cotton Club in the late 1920's that shaped him as a jazz pianist, composer and orchestra leader par excellence. President Nixon states, “No man swings more, or stands higher, than The Duke“. President Nixon awarded the Duke the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest civilian medal, as part of the celebration of the jazz maestro's 70th birthday, right in his own home town, at the White House, at this point in time, March 8, 1971.
