On June 26, 1945 - The U.N. Charter is signed.
Even before the celebrations of the ending of World War II, delegates from 50 nations began a 63-day conference in San Francisco to establish the United Nations, an organization designed to insure world peace. On June 26th, 1945, the delegates gathered in San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House to sign the U.N. Charter. As early as 1942, Cordell Hull, then Secretary of State under Franklin Roosevelt had begun talks with other nations about creating the organization now hailed by President Truman.
" The overwhelming majority of the American people, regardless of party, support the United Nations. "
Whatever it's limitations, the UN did help keep the Cold War from turning hot.
