On February 5, 1974, heiress Patty Hearst is kidnapped from her apartment by a small leftist group called The Symbionese Liberation Army. Initial demands of $2,000,000 of foodstuffs for the poor were met by publisher Randolph Hearst, but in the meantime, Patty appeared to have joined her captors under the name of Tania (Tanya). She was seen pointing a rifle during a hold up of the San Francisco bank shortly after informing her parents that she had joined the war for "the freedom of oppressed people." Authorities tracked the SLA to a hideout in Los Angeles, where gunfire and tear gas sparked a fire that killed Symbionese chief, Donald DeFreeze, and 4 others. Patty Hearst, or Tania was not present, and eventually returned to a more routine existence.
