An MIT Police officer has died after he was shot near the Stata Center on campus Thursday night.
MIT sent out an alert to students telling them to stay indoors as officers sweep the campus. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m.
The Middlesex DA’s office says the officer was responding to a report of a disturbance in the area of Vassar and Main streets when he was shot multiple times.
He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. No arrest has been made and the search for a suspect or suspects is ongoing.
At about 1 a.m. Thursday night, officers from several agencies were involved in a pursuit into Watertown. It is unknown if it was connected to the shooting at MIT. A WBZ employee on the scene says one person has been taken into custody in Watertown near Mt. Auburn Street and Dexter Street.
A witness says he heard explosions and gunshots before the suspect was taken into custody.
Another suspect is reported to be at large. State Police, K9 units and the Air Wing are assisting in the search.
Students on the campuses of Boston University and Harvard University were also alerted of the shooting.
