There are financial troubles even in paradise. The tourism industry in the Maldives is facing a total loss of nearly 100 million U.S. dollars, according to the country’s travel industry association.
The decline in numbers comes after a police mutiny led to the ousting of the Maldives’ president, and subsequent clashes.
Many foreign travellers and tourism operators have delayed or cancelled trips to the archipelago this winter, normally a peak season for the island destination.
Tourism officially accounts for 30 percent of the Maldives’ 2.1 billion U.S. dollar economy - but according to the island’s tourism industry association, the actual number is closer to 75-80 percent.
China is the biggest source of holidaymakers for the Maldives. Around 200 thousand Chinese tourists visited the islands in 2011, about a quarter of the total.
