On July 3, 1971 - The first laser surgery is performed in Sweden.
July 3, 1971, an early example of laser surgery, a revolutionary bloodless method of destroying tumors and cancers, is performed by Swedish physicians. X-rays determine the exact location of the tumor while a model of the brain shows the area to be destroyed by the powerful laser beams. The patient's head is set within a Coulometer and dials are adjusted for the depth, location and the duration of the operation. The gamma ray beam, composed of 179 beams of cobalt radiation is then focused and fired deep into the skull. The rays burn away the diseased area while the patient remains conscious. Two hours later, without messy scalpels or knives, the operation is complete.
