玛丽有只小绵羊最早传唱于1830年，这首儿歌是根据真实事件启发创作完成的。有个叫玛丽（就是后来的玛丽泰夫人）的小姑娘养了一只小绵羊，她非常喜欢这只小绵羊无论走到哪里都会把小绵羊到哪里，有一天玛丽受哥哥的怂恿把小绵羊带到了学校，孩子们又蹦又笑，扰乱了课堂秩序，之后发生的一系列有趣的事情。这首儿歌中lamb“绵羊”这个单词反复出现，老师或家长可以给孩子们讲绵羊的特征，它的毛是卷的，角也是像海螺一样向里圈。Sheep是绵羊，goat的意思是山羊，山羊的毛是直的，它的角也是直的。
