The Italian physicist Guillermo Marconi made world [-----1-----] on December 12, 1901, when he sent a signal from a 164 foot antennae in England to a receiver 2,232 miles away in Newfoundland.

Marconi developed the radio, and his [-----2-----] laid the groundwork for TV transmission as well. He was awarded a Nobel Prize and in 1959 the Italian government [-----3-----] a marble obelisk in Rome on the anniversary of his trans-Atlantic breakthrough.

Marconi's earliest wireless discoveries were not properly appreciated by Italian authorities but Britain recognized their import and [-----4-----] him to keep working. Marconi went on to develop the first short wave systems, communicating from as far away as England to Australia.
