/ɒ/是一个短元音，发音时嘴唇和舌头都比发长元音/ɔ:/时要放松，具体表现在：舌尖位置不变，但舌中部下沉及舌根向后上方推送的幅度都比/ɔ:/要小；嘴唇稍向前突出，幅度小于长元音/ɔ:/，因而双颌打开的幅度也略大；相对于/ɔ:/在口腔中形成的椭圆柱形通道，它的感觉更象一个乒乓球。
