Tied up with ropes, magician Harry Houdini is lowered into a glass tank filled with water. A curtain is then pulled in front of the tank. The people in the audience hold their breath as they nervously wait. Just when they begin to get really worried, Houdini emerges, and everyone cheers.
Born 134 years ago today, Houdini didn't have much success with magic at first. He even considered giving up. Then in 1899, Houdini followed advice from a theater manager and focused on performing escape acts. Within a few years, he became famous in America and Europe as the “King of Handcuffs.” In his show, he would successfully escape from any pair of handcuffs given him. Once Houdini escaped from a pair of handcuffs an expert blacksmith had spent five years making. And he did this in front of an audience of thousand people!During his lifetime, Houdini escaped from handcuffs, jails, chains, ropes, underwater boxes and even straitjackets. Even today, he remains one of the greatest escape artists the world has ever known.
