"It's 2008! Shouldn't we have flying cars by now?" Comments like this one often appear in Internet articles about new automobiles. While partly a joke, this kind of comment emphasizes the fact that today's consumers expect automobiles to keep up with the innovation seen in other products. Carmakers, eager to meet this expectation, are introducing hing-tech features that would have been seen as science fiction just a few years ago.
While flying cars do remain more fiction than science, automobile designs have seen significant changes in a more important area: fuel effeciency. In a world of skyrocketing oil prices and sky-blackening pullution, automakers are always looking for ways to reduce fuel use in automobiles. hybrid electric cars combine a regular engine with electrical power. The electrical system eases the demands on the gasoline engine, greatly improving fuel efficiency and cutting down on pollutants The current champion of hybrid power is the Toyota Prius. The Prius has a smaller engine than similar-sized cars, but its electrical system automatically assists the engine when more power is needed. The Prius charges its batteries by recycling otherwise wasted energy, such as when the driver puts on the brakes.
