Memories are like rain. They can wash over me in a deluge or softly as a light mist. I've noticed that brief flickers of my life, before I arrived here, return from time to time. I suddenly recall the bright green grass of my hometown or racing down sandy beaches along the ocean. But they only come in brief glimpses.
These days, I am consumed more with the immediate: the heavyset sky, the sitting fog, and on the horizon, a thousand new buildings being erected. These images consume me and fill my mind with ideas of a country on the verge of becoming something spectacular. Yet it is the aged beggar, the splotchy, dirty swing in the park and the edges of cigarettes beside the bus stop that give this city soul.
I have been finding myself more in moments of quiet, taking time for contemplation of the world around me. I have found myself riding my bike for hours through the streets of Tianjin, letting the wind breeze against my cheek and numb my lips, utterly amazed at what surrounds me. The storefronts and the people walking down the streets provide a deep contrast to my fleeting memories of life back home.
