The new year is a time for celebration around the world. In China, the way people ring in the new year is gradually changing. Some opt to spend it outdoors or visiting a top tourist stop.

Travel is becoming a more popular way to spend New Year's holidays. The countdown for the holiday period has begun and some Chinese travelers are eyeing some really hot New Year travel destinations.

Mr Fang said, "In this winter holiday, I prefer to travel to some warmer places like Hainan province or some Southeast Asia countries. Or go to ski, a cryo-tour in South Korea or Japan is also a good choice."

For some women, low price sales during the New Year at some destinations create a desire to do some serious shopping.

Miss Xia said, "It is now the sales season in Hong Kong and I will go there traveling and shopping."

Group holidays has been the traditional method to travel, following along behind a guide and moving quickly from one place to another. However, people are now beginning to travel in other ways.

Li Meng, deputy general manager of China International Travel Service, said, "Recently, traveling options in China have diversified over the new year period. In addition to group holidays, people are eyeing other options including booking self-guided tours.The number of Chinese tourists going abroad this year has increased by about 30 percent compared with last year."

Using one's annual vacation to visit old favorites or emerging destinations, people are looking to create the perfect trip or seek inspiration.

Nowadays, Chinese celebrations for the new year involve more than staying up late to see the old year out. More people are traveling to other parts of the country or going abroad to usher in the new year on vacation.
