The White House and key lawmakers have cleared the way for swift Senate action to avert January spike in income taxes for nearly all Americans. However, House Democrats reject the proposal yesterday.

 The Federal Aviation Administration's aircraft registry is missing key information on who owns more than 100,000 planes in the U.S. To fix the problem, all aircraft owners will be ordered to register the planes. The FAA fears the information gap could be exploited by terrorists and drug traffickers.

Jury deliberations will resume this morning in the 2002 kidnapping trial involving Elizabeth Smart. Brain David Mitchell is accused in the case. Lawyers have agreed that Mitchell did kidnapped Smart but defense attorney say he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity and then sent to a prison mental hospital.

Sarah Palin says she plans to visit Haiti this weekend to aid humanitarian efforts in the Caribbean country. Palin says her husband Todd and daughter Bristol will likely come as well. The Palins are going with Rev. Franklin Graham as part of the outreach of his Samaritan's Purse relief organization.
