On June 23, 1956 - Gamal Abdel Nasser was elected President of Egypt.

Gamal Abdel Nasser was elected President of Egypt on June 23rd, 1956. A month later he nationalized the Suez Canal after Western bankers refused to finance plans to build the Aswan Dam. The British and French paratroopers intent on regaining the canal then joined an Israeli invasion of Egypt. Fearing the conflict might ignite World War III, the US and the USSR stayed out of it. Under pressure from the U.N., a cease-fire was declared. Although Egypt suffered heavy losses, Western powers failed to regain control of the canal. As a result, Nassar emerged as a real hero in the Arab world. He continued to press for Arab unity, and in 1958 joined Egypt with Syria to form the United Arab Republic.
