It is also sung by Mariah Carey!! Who we ARE talking about to~day.
When Mariah's Caucasian mother and afro-Latino father got married, cross-race marriage was still a big deal in the States. Their neighbors poisoned their family dog and set fire to their family car in protest, but the family got by.
They named Mariah Carey after a song named "they call the wind Mariah". But her parents got divorced when she was four. she stated later that her childhood definitely did make a difference in the direction of her career.

Like a Cinderella story, it all took off form there.
Carey published her first album "Mariah Carey" in 1990. It was during that time, she got romantically involved with, the man who gave her a shot at the music industry Tommy Mottola.
They eventually got married in 1993, but Tommy Mottola became very controlling. In one interview, Mariah says Tommy wouldn't let her do anything on her own. So even though the public was under the impression that her marriage was sweet and happily ever after, they got divorced in 1997.
After the divorce, Mariah felt fully in control of her life and music, which can be heard in her 1997 album "butterfly".

The album was a major hit and sold over 5 million copies world wide.
This was probably the peak of Carey's career. At that time, she had sold over 175 million albums world wide, and a lot of credit has to be given to her own characteristics that she displayed within her music.
