The year 2010 is considered by some in China to be unlucky for getting married. However, wedding businesses in Hong Kong are seeing plenty of interest at the region's annual wedding expo.
For their big day, Chinese brides can choose several dresses in different colors and styles. Brides often walk into the banquet venue in a western-style white dress. They then change into other gowns to toast the guests.
The 58th Hong Kong Wedding Expo was held over the weekend. Over 800 exhibitors took part in the event, up 12 percent on last year.
From wedding planners to wedding cards, make-up artists and wedding accessories, you can always find what you need.
Insiders are optimistic about the fortunes of the industry in 2010.
Charlotte Fung, Officer of Hong Kong-Asia Exhibition, said, "Hong Kong people like new things and western elements in their wedding. That's why many overseas exhibitors are attracted here. Also, it's easier now for mainland couples to travel to Hong Kong, to buy jewellery and take wedding photos."
While westerners usually take their photos on the wedding day, in Chinese culture it's more common to take pre-marriage photos.
Arden Chin, Director of Zara Bride Wedding Gallery, said, "Pre-wedding photos cost 10 thousand HK dollars locally, whilst they cost around 40 to 50 thousand HK dollars overseas. Most Hong Kong people like to go to Japan, or to European cities, where there is sunshine and beaches."
However, some people consider the year 2010 unlucky for marriage in the Chinese zodiac.
In the Gregorian international calendar, February 4th is the first day of spring. This year it fell before the start of Chinese New Year. So the coming year is considered unlucky, with a lack of springtime energy.
But young people don't seem so concerned. They believe 2010 to be a year of perfection, with Valentines' day and Chinese New Year falling on the same day.
The wedding expo attracted over 90 thousand visitors. The organizers expect around 43 thousand people to tie the knot in Hong Kong in 2010.
