Typhoon Parma triggered widespread flooding and landslides that buried at least two families in the Philippines on Sunday. It then lingered threateningly off the coast, drenching the country's north.

The typhoon has killed 16 local residents. In Benguet province, a family of five died when their home was buried in a landslide. Seven people, including another family of five, were buried in a nearby village. Four also died in other provinces, most of them drowning after being swept away by floodwaters.

Parma headed northwest into the South China Sea, but slowed down to about 10 kilometers per hour. It then began to interact with Typhoon Melor, a storm over the north Pacific Ocean that is pushing west.

The typhoon was close enough to Taiwan to cause heavy rain on the island. Troops evacuated some villages and loaded sandbags in preparation for possible flooding. Authorities warned of heavy rainfall and possible landslides in northern and southern regions.
