September 21st, 1954 - US Nautilus launched.
The U.S. submarine Nautilus, the world's [-----1-----], was launched in 1954 after eight years of planning. The 340-foot submarine cost $55 million to build and was capable of [-----2-----]around the world without surfacing, because its [-----3-----]required no air. With a top speed of 30 knots, the Nautilus could move faster underwater than [-----4-----] on the surface. Admiral Hyman G. Rickover played the key role in the development of the submarine. The Nautilus made further[-----5-----] when it became the first vessel to sail under the North Pole in 1958.It also was the forerunner of later nuclear submarines such as the Trident, which carries an awesome arsenal of long range nuclear missiles.
