the two-faced cat is currently the most famous feline(猫) on the planet.

The three-year-old tortoiseshell (花斑家猫) has her own Facebook page and a YouTube video that’s been viewed over a million times. Take a look at this cat and you can understand why: One half is solid black with a green eye—the other half has typical orange tabby (虎斑的) stripes and a blue eye.

How does a cat end up looking like that? Leslie Lyons, a professor at the University of California, who studies the genetics of domestic cats, said she’d never seen a cat exactly like Venus.

Is Venus a Chimera?
维纳斯是一个神话传说吗？
Many reports about Venus refer to the cat as a “Chimera.” In mythology, a chimera is a monster made up of parts of different animals. A feline chimera is a cat whose cells contain two types of DNA, caused when two embryos (胚胎) fuse together.
很多传闻中的维纳斯是指像奇美拉一样的猫。在神话中，奇美拉是由不同的动物的不同部分组成的怪物。猫科奇美拉是细胞中包含两部分基因的猫，是由于两个胚胎融合在一起造成的。
Among cats, chimeras are really not all that rare. In fact, most male tortoiseshell cats are chimeras. The distinctively mixed orange and black coat is a sign that the cat has an extra X chromosome (染色体). But female cats already have two X chromosomes so they can own that coat without the extra X, which means Venus is not necessarily a chimera.
在猫科动物中，嵌合体不是那么少见的，实际上大部分的雄性花斑猫都是嵌合体。独特的橙色和黑色皮毛是一个标志，表明这只猫有一个额外的X染色体。但雌猫已经有两条X染色体，因此它们即使没有额外的X染色体也能有这样的皮毛，也就是说，双面猫不一定是嵌合体。
Cat’s Blue Eye another Mystery

Cat fanciers who are amazed by Venus’ split face may be missing the real story: her single blue eye. Cat eyes are typically green or yellow, not blue. A blue-eyed cat is typically a Siamese (暹罗猫) or else a cat with a lot of white fur on them. Venus appears to have only a white patch on her chest, which is not enough to explain the blue eye. “She is a bit of a mystery,” said Lyons.
