At least five people are dead and Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition following a shooting that happened outside a Tucson, Arizona supermarket as Giffords was meeting with constituents. Hospital officials say Giffords has undergone surgery. Those killed include a federal judge and a 9-year-old child. The U.S. Capitol Police say the alleged shooter is in custody.
People familiar with the investigation tell the Associated Press that the man held in that shooting has been identified as 22-year-old Jared Loughner. Little information is immediately known about Loughner such as his background or possible motive in the attack.
President Barack Obama is speaking out about the shooting. The president has called the incident “an unspeakable tragedy”. He also says that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.
Brazilian authorities say the number of people left homeless by flooding has risen to about 100,000 in four southeastern states. Civil defense authorities in the hardest-hit state say 16 people have been killed there as of Friday.
