On September 18th, 1961, Dad Hammerskjold died in a plane crash.

Secretary General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold was the son of a Swedish Prime Minister. The former civil servant was first elected to the post in 1953. He was unanimously re-elected in 1957, after playing a strong hand in the Suez Crisis. Cold War tensions caused him to travel extensively. Hammerskjold conferred with leaders in China, Russia and much of greater Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In 1960, the USSR demanded that Hammerskjold step down after he dispatched U.N. troops to subdue a rebellion in the Congo. Hammerskjold refused to resign, but flew to Rhodesia, hoping to negotiate a cease-fire. There his plane suspiciously exploded on September 18th, 1961.
